Lunch at the Norfolk

We went to the Norfolk in Freo on Saturday for lunch.  I love to spend a day in Freo,as I'm sure most West Aussies do.  It was so great having a feed, checking out the markets and visiting the Cruelty Free Shop.  But enough of that, let's talk food at the Norfolk....

I had a vego pizza (no cheese of course) and some hand cut chips.  Marcus had a Chicken Caesar and the confit duck, both of which he loved.  It was really cheap!  For all that food and two wines and a bottle of San Pelligrino, it came to just over $70.  We did use our 25% off entertainment book voucher, though.

I do need to note that when the pizza came it did have cheese on it.  I didn't know if I should just eat it or what.  Marcus was such a gentleman.  He firmly stated that he had asked for a vegan pizza and would like a replacement.  I reckon the waitress was pretty annoyed, but within 10 minutes I had the beauty picture above within my grasp. Did I eat it all?  Hell yes.  It was deluxe.  Oh, and the hand cut fries were so amazing.  Crispy, skin on, well-seasoned goodness.  Going back when I'm in Freo next.

Book Review:  Skinny Bitch

This is the first book I read when I decided to turn vegan.  It should have been the book I was reading when I was thinking about turning vegan, but it just didn't work out that way.  Amy (my great and inspiring sister) lent this book to me the weekend after I turned.  I read it in one sitting, as I am inclined to do (speed reader).
This book has some of the most powerful imagery I have encountered so far.  There is a chapter where they have interviewed slaughter house workers who admit to abusing animals.  One comment sticks with me always, and is probably responsible for my stomach turning when I smell bacon cooking.  I used to drool at that smell. Skinny Bitch is some convincing arguments on why to change your diet and lifestyle, disguised as a sassy diet book.
Read it.  Change your life.

Restaurant Review:  White Salt

My dear one and I went to breakfast at White Salt on Sunday morning.  Sunday breakfasts aren't usually my thing because they require surrendering the bed and getting dressed before 10 am.  I have been sacrificing my usual sloth habits since Marcus has been between work.  And secretly I've been enjoying it.  The morning is a beautiful time of day.  I am beginning to understand why he always leaps out of bed before sunrise.

So we went to White Salt.  I experienced my usual trepidation in trying a new restaurant, and I felt even more anxious when we were seated and looking at the menu.  I could see myself breakfasting on toast and jam.  The only veggie sides were tomatoes, hash browns and mushrooms.

The waitress was a real sweet heart.  I explained my situation to her and she was really understanding.  She came back minutes later and told me that the chef would cook fresh field mushrooms with olive oil, sauteed English spinach, grilled tomato and hash browns.  I was ecstatic when it arrived.  Cooked beautifully and so fresh!

At White Salt's breakfast you can help yourself to all of the New Norcia toast you like.  They have a toast station set up with jams, Vegemite and peanut butter.  Fruit bread, wholemeal, grain and white were all laid out in neat rows.  Mmmm.

It was a really memorable breaky for me.  They were so accommodating.  The view was amazing. The tea was high class.  And I've already banged on about the breaky enough for one day.  I reckon it was the best way to spend a cold, wet, blustery Sunday morning.  Watching the sea churn from inside a friendly and relaxed restaurant that understands real hospitality.
